August 14th Bargello Workshop at W&L Law School

The Material List for the Bargello Placemats (should make 3 about 17 " by 13 1/2")
  • 1/4 yard each of 5 different fabrics (use 44" wide fabric)
  • Fabric for binding
  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
  • Scissors
  • Neutral thread and thread to match binding
  • Sewing machine
  • Straight pins and Safety pins
  • Marking Pencil
  • 20" x 42" rectangle each of batting and fabric for backing

NOW HERE IS YOUR HOMEWORK- Mary Adkins will also be at the July meeting to explain this part if you are confused.

From the fabric:
  1. Cut 4 strips- each 2 and 1/2 inches wide from each of the 5 fabrics. Sew four identical color runs from dark to light.
  2. Sew the color runs together (in the same order).
Prepare the batting and backing:
  1. Choose a lightweight batting with even thickness and minimal loft.
  2. Wash and iron the backing fabric.
  3. Place the backing fabric wrong side up. Lay the batting on top of the fabric and smooth out the wrinkles.
  4. Pin the two layers with safety pins.
  5. With a pencil, draw a line along the middle of the batting from top to bottom. Make sure the line is straight and perpendicular to the top and bottom. This will be the guide for the first Bargello strip.
  6. Mark one horizontal line across the center of the batting from side to side. You will refer to this line to match the center of each strip as you pin them down.
